Update: Moisture vs Moisturizing (Read More Info for Information Links)
I understand that I cannot just put oil in my hair to ‘moisturize’ it, but in order to lock in the moisture (water) I must seal it in with an oil or something, right? This this or that doesn’t moisturize got me totally twisted because when I think of the word moisturize when it comes to hair and skin, i think of what helps the skin/hair to retain moisture. What is water (moisture) without the lotion or oil or butter or creme

Dry hair is usually the hair that has not a sufficient amount of natural moisturizer and oil. This can be caused by over-exposure to the sun without protecting the hair, by excessive washing – especially with harsh chemical substances, excessive use of styling products and hot styling methods (blow drier, heat iron), excessive dying of the hair etc.
The solution rests in Natural moisturizers, such as natural oils, and nutritious remedies. The jojoba oil is much recommended for regaining the shine and brightness of your hair, as the molecular structure of this oil is almost similar to the one of sebum, the natural hair moisturizer. It can be used as an overnight as well as a daily treatment for the hair.
Other types of natural oils that provide moisture for your hair are: olive, ylang-ylang, almond, avocado, rosemary essential oil, wheat germ oil, emu oil, shea oil and herbal oils such as: nettle oil, plantain oil, burdock oil etc. These are very efficient, as they provide a wide range of nutrients, antioxidants and vitamins vital for the hair and scalp. You can also mix one of these oils with honey and then apply it as a mask for the hair.

Shea Butter and Other Natural Moisturizers
Instead, opt for something like organic shea butter. Full of healing properties, shea butter is one of the healthiest moisturizers for hair and skin alike. Jojoba or papaya oils are also very healthy and popular. You can also try ayurvedic oils found in health food shops and Indian beauty supply stores. Obviously, the texture of the hair is very different, but an ayurvedic-based hair oil will be natural and gentle enough for daily use and will promote softness and resiliency.
You can also moisturize straight from the kitchen cupboard. Coconut, olive, and safflower oils are excellent for the hair and skin. If you need to do a hot oil treatment once a week, try using one of these oils, gently heated in the microwave. Apply carefully from scalp to ends, wrap a towel around your head for about twenty minutes, and then rinse out using lukewarm water.

Water without the …
) If my hair is presoaked with water (moisture) & I use an emollient and/or humectant (oil) to seal or retain moisture then who’s to say this is not a way to moisturize hair. Is it because it’s not premixed? My thoughts are whatever you do to moisturize your hair is up to u, whether it’s already presoaked with water and you seal with a butter, oil or if you use something that’s already mixed do whatever works for u.
Water without the oil or oil without the water is not what I was saying
Water = Hydration.

Yes, I have to do …
Yes, I have to do my hair soaking wet, no towel drying is pretty good for me. Sometimes I wrap a towel around my head when I get frustrated with the dripping/running. But I still love the results. So I use the TIGI MM of course (Bedhead Moisture Maniac) w/ only 1 oil – Wildgrowth hair oil. Seems like my hair HATES all other oils. Shea is my prepoo, but NOT my styler. My hair hates it w/ water. hmmmm, 4A/4B, Minor 3C at crown.
AMEN!!!
AMEN!!!

Great video…I ALWAYS use my homemade whipped shea butter on my hair after I wash or condition wash and during the week to revive my curls after sleeping on them, I use a little bit of my homemade hair spritz (water/veg. glycerine/oil of choice).
I agree with the …
I agree with the nail comment=) I only do natural nail, they call me the “Repairer”, because I really help the nail grow back healthy( especially after wearing false nail). Mostly every style they put on false nail I do it with natural nail. Unfortunately you can’t use coco oil and shea butter w/favorite E.O. , but don’t put the melted shea butter directly on hair but more on scalp( oil treatment) luv vid keep @it.

thx for sharing.. I always put an oil on after I put some water on my hair. You cant have one without the ohter for me.
go to the natural …
go to the natural haven blog . she is a kinky haired scientist that never say things without proof. in you links, they are talking about nourishing the hair. Hair is a dead cell. you can nourish your scalp and hope it grows healthy hair. After that all you can do is protect the hair cuticle from being scratched or the hair from being weak and easily break due to dryness. Oil seals moist in cuz oil blocks water and weight down on the cuticle(conditioning) no need for ORGANIC oil.
Just had an …
Just had an epiphany! Possibly all the concern over semantics for what to call ‘moisture’ can be summed up as — moisture meaning moist hair is a balance of 1: hydration, meaning water, water, and water and 2: lubrication, oils that are a weak sealant which ‘lock’ the water molecules within the hair shaft as a barrier to evaporating elements like sun, wind, etc. Only through this combo can one ‘moisterize.’ …just don’t make that barrier too strong, hence throwing the combo out of balance!
I use jojoba oil …
I use jojoba oil mixed with spring water & it works well on my hair.
I use water and oil …
I use water and oil and/or my shea frosting recipe to moisturize my hair.
For that reason, I …
For that reason, I like a thin coating of a shea butter and aloe vera mix. Shea butter is a buttery oil and yet mixed with the humectant properties of shea aloe — it’s not a complete seal. I love, love, love organic aloe vera juice and gel. Nature’s gift to dry hair….
Has anyone here been outside after it’s rained with aloe vera gel in your hair? Seriously… My hair felt like the definition of love! With aloe, my hair just SOAKED up the moisture in the air. A-mazing.
I feel it’s like …
I feel it’s like chem 101. Water and oil do not mix. So oils and oily butters are a great sealant — they are a great barrier to water/moisture that would normally evaporate away from the hair shaft. However –with too great a sealant (like vaseline or mineral oil) or too much build up– the barrier eventually REVERSES. Meaning: once your hair dries out (which it will eventually do even with the initial oil barrier present) — the oils now KEEP new water/moisure OUT.
Hope this helps.
I use coconut oil …
But thanks for the tip on how to properly moisturize hair. I’m trying the soaking wet oil seal thingy tonight when I wash my hair.
I use coconut oil and Silken Child leave-in condish.

Your nails are cute! I’m growing my nails out too. saves lots of money.
According to the …
According to the link I have in More Info, your statement is not true. The list oils that moisturize. The key is ALL OILS ARE NOT THE SAME. As stated in the video, water is moisture, but water without something to seal in or retain the moisture is useless. Water alone will not ‘moisturize’. Of course water based products will. If I already have water in my hair, add an emollient, and the ending results is my hair is soft and moisturized, then why say that combo did not ‘moisturize’ my hair?
The nails are an …

yea you’re right if someone puts oils in their hair..you could imagine that their doing that to lock in the moisture of the water.
but its simple as is.. OILS DO NOT MOISTURE. you basically know your hair is being moistured when you’re using a water base
